"One Small Change Can Have an Enormous Impact"
Karen Brown
I have found it dificult to write about myself and somehow condense the essence of who I am into a few words. I guess you could say these words are only the first drop and the ripples are the many layers of who I am. Anyway here goes.... I am a registered counsellor and certified animal assisted psychotherapist based in Western Australia, committed to honouring each client's unique narrative and identity. My approach is deeply personalised, integrating professional expertise, qualifications, and my own authentic self into every session.
Since graduating from Notre Dame University, over 10yrs ago, with a Bachelor's Degree in Counselling, I've been on a journey of continuous growth and learning. I've delved into various therapeutic theories and modalities, gaining invaluable experience working with diverse individuals facing life's many challenges.
Yet, amidst these experiences, I hold firm that the foundation of effective therapy lies in the therapeutic relationship itself – built on principles of respect, non-judgment, and genuine authenticity. Creating a safe and supportive environment is essential for fostering growth and facilitating meaningful change.
With a lifelong affinity for animals and a profound connection to the natural world, I have pursued specialised training and certification as an Animal Assisted Psychotherapist.
This unique combination has ignited my passion for exploring the transformative power of the human-animal bond and our interconnectedness with the natural environment.
I'm particularly dedicated to supporting those navigating animal bereavement and providing care professionals like veterinarians, veterinary nurses and animal care workers, with the emotional support they deserve.
The journey towards healing and personal growth begins with understanding and empathy. Together, we can harness the subtle yet profound changes that therapy can bring, creating ripples that resonate across multiple facets of your life.
Services
Individual Counselling
Individual counselling offers a path to navigate life's challenges, manage stress, boost self-esteem, and develop effective coping strategies for overall well-being. It's a collaborative journey where you're truly heard, validated, and empowered to make meaningful changes in your life.
I understand that taking the first step into counselling can feel daunting. Please know that I'm here to listen, address any concerns you may have, and tailor our sessions to meet your unique needs.
Pet Loss Bereavement
For many, the bonds formed with pets or animals are deeply significant, often providing emotional and physical support comparable to any human relationship. When these bonds are disrupted by death or life changes, the resulting grief can be overwhelming and profound.
Pet grief and bereavement are valid experiences, akin to any other loss in life. Each person's journey through this grief is unique and deeply personal.
Counselling in this area offers a safe space to navigate these complex emotions with someone who understands that your animal companion was much more than "just a pet".
Veterinarians, Veterinary Nurses and Animal Care Workers
People are often drawn to working with animals because of a deep-seated appreciation for the human-animal bond and a strong desire to improve animal well-being.
Veterinarians, Veterinarian Nurses, and Animal Care Workers face unique and often unseen stresses in their professions. Psychological, financial, and ethical challenges can take a toll on their mental health.
As a Certified Animal Assisted Psychotherapist, I bring a deep understanding of the human-animal bond and the specific challenges that professionals in your field encounter, along with a profound respect for your individual perspectives and experiences.
Group Therapy
I hold a certificate in group therapy and have considerable experience in this area.
Connecting with others with a shared experience can provide an opportunity to express your emotions, thoughts and behaviours in a safe space and feel less alone.
Groups are a powerful medium for change.
I facilitate groups in a variety of areas ranging from support groups to psychoeducational groups with a specific subject and goal. They can be one off, time limited or ongoing.
This service is under constant development in line with client interest and need.
For Veterinarians, Veterinarian nurses and Animal Care Workers I am available to attend your practice. Please contact me to discuss your particular needs.

A Hub for Inspiration
Verses, Vibes, and Resources
Poetry and quotes often bring clarity when words fail to express our thoughts or emotions. Below are a few of my personal favourites. Please share anything that resonates with you, and I'll consider adding it to the collection.
I'll also occasionally include intriguing articles and research that reinforce what we already understand. Animals truly "make the world go around".
The Just a Dog poem below I think applies to any companion animal. To you they are never just a dog, cat, bird, horse or goat!
